Periodisation, or long term planning of training, is an important subject for an aspiring mountaineer. This video explores a few different methods of how a mountaineer can plan and periodise their strength training. Periodisation is the systematic planning of athletic or physical training, with the aim to reach the best possible performance in the most important competition (i.e. your climb). When it comes to periodisation for strength training, the majority of mountaineers are familiar with only one approach. Start with general strength work. Do a long period of maximum strength work. Then convert all that strength into mountain-specific muscular endurance. This method is tried and proven; there is no arguing that. And in the best-case scenario, this can be incredibly effective for a mountaineer to prepare for their climb. However, this method also has several drawbacks and limitations, which can significantly affect a mountaineer preparations and chance of success on the mountain.
