"I have had chronic ongoing knee pain for years and just accepted that this was my lot in life. I use poles. I dreaded descents. A couple of months ago I happened upon Summit Strength and their Hikers' Knee program. Turns out, I was just ridiculously weak in areas of my body that I assumed I'd be strong in just from hiking. Rowan at Summit Strength asked me to send some assessment videos to him (I'm doing it online) and he knew exactly what I needed to work on. He has tailored an individual program for me. Mark approached Summit Strength with a big hiking goal. He wanted to post a 'Fastest Known Time' on a 130-mile hiking trail. Initially, he wanted to hike 26 miles a day (equivalent to a marathon a day), entirely unsupported for five days. But in preparing for this, he knew he needed to overcome recurring ankle and knee pain while hiking, work on his balance and improve his overall endurance to hike longer days. In the end, Mark accomplished his goal in a total of 3d 18h 53m 34s, which is more than 30 miles a day!

"I first hired Summit Strength to help improve joint pain that was impacting not only my hiking but also my day to day life.

When we started working together I received tailored and re-tailored the programs to address not only my feet, knee and hip pain but also came up with ways around other problems such as my vertigo. I loved that there was always another pain free option to address each exercise, which also means there is variety.

Summit Strength is a slow burn - it starts off feeling kind of easy and with less time commitment than I was used too but as time goes you get more out of each exercise and the results are there, oh and it gets tougher.

There have been so many aha moments of “oh that pain in the middle of the night is gone” or “ oh I just got to the ground on that squat, and my knees are fine”. My first aha was simply going downstairs quicker and easier and without the normal pain. When I set out with Summit Strength my goal was to improve my pain levels, never to eliminate, and to be able to get out and enjoy more hikes with my friends who patiently waited for me on the downhill, anything else was a bonus. With their goal setting I put in more than I expected to achieve and have to admit that I was surprised to tick them all off and more. I don’t think I would have got here on my own.

I would also recommend anyone else who needs that point of difference to their training to get them across the line whether it is a specific trip, to just improve or to deal with pain to try this because it works and is simpler than everything I was doing before. No matter your hiking experience (I was a hiking guide years ago) they will offer up ways to improve your skills on the trail."

The process began with a personal interview and review of past problems I have had with foot health on the trail, followed by a customized program to prepare me.

One specific moment which stood out was I was concerned about lugging heavy therapy balls with me for in-camp recovery, and lo and behold, super lightweight cork balls show up in my mailbox!

"Six months ago I decided to make a bid for the top of Kilimanjaro. I am 67, and I nearly died twice in 2020. I had some health issues and injuries to overcome, and I knew that in order to get to the top of Kili, I needed to do everything I could to train properly. I searched for podcasts about hiking and climbing, and that's when I discovered Rowan Smith and Summit Strength. I listened to every podcast on the list, and some I listened to twice. I loved Rowan's "no nonsense" approach to training and decided to sign up for his online personal training program. It was the best decision I could have made. 

As a former runner, I struggled for years with what I thought were running injuries. I soon learned in Rowan's program that my injuries weren't from running—they were from improper training, imbalances and weaknesses. Within two weeks of Rowan's program, the "running injuries" I'd been living with for 30+ years were gone, and they still are. 

The 12-week training program Rowan developed for me was based on a physical assessment and was tailored to my personal preferences and goals. It included training for strength, cardio, and endurance. Some of the workouts were really hard, but Rowan was always supportive and flexible. The training also included information on high-altitude hiking, nutrition, Acute Mountain Sickness, diaphragmatic breathing, and keeping a positive mental attitude. His training is all evidence based, and he presents both sides of an issue on controversial topics.

On September 24, 2021, I summited Kilimanjaro, reaching Uhuru Point (19,341-foot elevation) just after dawn, and it was epic. I will never say it was easy (it wasn't), but Rowan's training prepared me well. I had the strength I needed, and I never had any muscle soreness or injuries. Having practiced belly breathing during cardio training was especially helpful, as I was struggling for breath near the top of the mountain. I don't know if I would have made it to the top of Kili without Rowan's help. He made me so much stronger than I ever was. Signing on with Rowan was one of the best decisions I've ever made, and I would do it again in a heartbeat."

"I've done a lot of hiking in the last few years and I saw areas that I wanted to improve, such as my hiking speed and I thought I could hike more efficiently. So I think overall the goal was to learn how to use my energy more efficiently so I would be more refreshed at the end of a hike.

Initially, we did an evaluation of strength for different parts of my body and my balance to determine where I needed to work. Then a custom exercise program was designed to address weaknesses that were identified.

The exercise program is a journey. You feel like you are making steady progress. One day after being in the program for a couple of months I tried one of the exercises I couldn't do in the initial evaluation and I was able to do it. This was very rewarding and encouraging because all the work I had been putting into the program was beginning to pay off.

I want to continue to work with Summit Strength because I like the organization of the program. Initial evaluation, Identification of weaknesses, develop a program to address those weaknesses. The reward is you can actually see and feel the results."

We really liked the complete package that the program offered, covering not just strength training but a good combination of outdoor hiking-specific sessions and recovery/mobility. "I found the Summit Strength program while listening to the Training for Trekking and Hiking podcast. Rowan conveys such a passion for enabling people to enjoy hiking without pain. I had suffered from IT Band knee pain for 6+ years, visiting numerous doctors and physical therapists. I found one therapist that helped keep my knee pain at bay while running marathons, but nothing kept the pain away while hiking - especially the downhills. The whole way up a mountain I would dread the downhill, making hikes this internal war of joy, dread, and inevitable pain. Rowan spoke with conviction that you didn't have to accept life with pain while hiking. He gave examples of seeing people cycle thru temporary fixes only to wind up back in the same pain or seeing trainers giving people wrong advice that didn’t help. I identified with his examples because I’d lived them. I kept thinking, should I try this? But like most people, I put it off! In August 2020, I finished a difficult 21+ mile hike in Washington state, where I had the worst pain I’d experienced in years. I came home with the same mixed feelings of joy for finishing, but disappointment at my body’s pain-filled performance. I thought: Something has to change if I want to keep hiking. I looked at Rowan’s program again and thought: What's to lose? I've tried most everything else, why not give this a chance? Still a little sceptical, I signed up.

Rowan took a complete history, asking thorough questions about my goals, my previous training, prior injuries, prior therapies, current fitness levels, and more. He truly did what he said he would – customized the approach to my needs and goals. One thing I love is Rowan never made things too hard. Doing exercises to help my pain was always a chore before. Rowan mixed up the exercises and kept them easy/moderate. I found that even on days when life happened, the fact that the exercises weren’t too taxing or time consuming allowed me to still complete them. The days where before I probably would’ve said oh I’ll skip today. Rowan also took into account that I love running as my primary exercise. He accommodated my training for a difficult full marathon by building my training around this goal. He understood that I didn’t have a big goal to climb one of the world’s highest peaks. I just wanted to be able to enjoy a few big hikes a year and not be in pain, while being able to keep running as my primary focus.

As I progressed through the program, I could tell I was getting stronger but I wasn’t sure of my true progress until a specific training run experience. There’s a wonky pitched hill on one of my favorite running routes. I always had knee pain running down this hill. In the full marathon, I was training for, I would have to do this hill twice. It’s harder mentally when you know that every time you get to “that spot” you’re going to be in pain. I was about 2/3 into the SS program when I moved to training for the marathon on a route including the dreaded downhill. I ran down the hill expecting the normal pain and it wasn’t there. It completely didn’t exist. I was literally in tears getting back to my car. I was in awe, thrilled. I kept saying to myself: This stuff does work! How did he do that? It was so simple! I messaged Rowan with a rambling and joyful account, telling him he was a magician!

I would absolutely choose to work with SS again. I’m continuing training with SS beyond the initial program. I was a sceptic that has become a true believer. I would love for everyone in the world who has pain to receive the gift I’ve been given. Rowan gave me a pain-free life back to enjoy my running and hiking again. THANK YOU Summit Strength!"

"I initially joined Summit Strength as I had a 1000km/7 week hike that I was planning to do (Little did I know then that Covid had other plans). Even though I am an experienced multi day hiker, taking on the challenge of a 7 week hike as my first solo hike was something that I thought I needed help with to get the best out of my body.

Rowan listened to me. I told him about my previous experiences with coaches and gyms and the like and he asked all the right questions, in regards to what I liked and what I didn't like about those experiences. He explained that to move forward I needed to approach his way with a clean slate and trust him. He explained that some exercises were negotiable and others not, and I was fine with that. Rowan asked about my hiking experiences, and wanted to know how my new challenge would compare.

Rowan is a wizard! And his strength programme is pure magic. I go to a myotherapist once a month for a tune up.... and today was the day. Normally when I go, something hurts and more often than not lots of things hurt - tight quads, TFL, ITB, SIJ, knees, lower back, wonky hips, think you get the picture. Well for the last 3 weeks (since my epic fall when hiking) I have been feeling good and no pain anywhere. I have been feeling really strong! So when I went to Nathan today, I was hoping that feeling strong would translate into a pain free session with him, because he wouldn't have to try and get all my bits done and feeling like they should. And guess what? He asked me what I had been doing differently because everything was inline, loose and responsive. He couldn't believe that none of my usual issues was rearing their ugly heads. It's an awesome feeling.

"My initial goal was to lose weight and regain hiking fitness after a prolonged illness. My training was specifically tailored to my level of fitness, and the one-on-one interaction made it so much easier to deal with the ups & downs of the daily routine.

After trying just about every other "fitness expert" on the web, I found they all based their training on the assumption we are all the same. Summit Strength is the only outfit to look at each customer as an individual with their own specific needs and ways of training that best suits their current situation, like when I broke my ankle and my whole training had to be put on hold and then altered to accommodate my rehabilitation. "I first hired Summit Strength because I wanted to reduce/eliminate knee pain on descents during hiking. After some tests, Rowan designed a targeted training program to strengthen all the muscles around my knee … in other words, all my leg muscles. This included some weighted hikes.

I have really enjoyed working with Summit Strength because it totally makes ‘sense’ when applied to hiking. I realised this when I learned how to do a controlled step down. I hiked a hilly 20km track and used this technique to control the shock through my knees and it worked. Maintaining enough strength in my legs to do this over a long hike has been key.

If I find I need further help, I will absolutely use Summit Strength again. And I do and have recommended them to other hikers."

    • "Coming back from injury I wanted to re-build strength and confidence in my leg again. I am a keen hiker and ski tourer. Now nearly at the end of the Hiker's Knee Prevention Program, I feel a significant improvement in my strength and general fitness which is really showing in my skiing.

      The workouts are well structured and easy to follow (clear videos for each exercise), they last about an hour but can be split or shortened to fit into a busy schedule. Plus Rowan is always available to answer any questions or tweak a workout if needed. Some of the online 'one size fits all training programs that you see all over the net had me disheartened before I even tried them, but that was never the case here. The workouts are straightforward, but you can feel the effort as you work through the reps, and as the exercises evolve through the program. I had a "yes, I've got this!" kind of feeling most of the way.

      There is a real sense of belonging to a group (in spite of everyone being all over the world). The FB groups are welcoming and encouraging; there are regular emails from Rowan with hints and advice- which for me quite weirdly almost always coincided with something I was thinking about for my own training. Also, you do need to check-in and be accountable for how you are doing and how you feel (in the nicest possible way- there is no pressure)- this really builds motivation. The whole experience starts with doing a number of exercises to check your current level of fitness, then halfway through you do them again- that was such an eyeopener, I had made so much progress in 6 weeks!

      I do intend to carry on and do the signature program; my hiking goals are a little fluffy at the moment (all hanging on the pandemic) but working with Rowan and Summit Strength has kept me more consistent in training than I have ever been. I have finally understood the difference between training and just exercising."

"I have successfully trekked Mt Kilimanjaro, Mt Stanley and Mt Aconcagua and, in August 2019, the Zanskar Indus Traverse but found them difficult. I had ramped up my training prior to the last trek so it was clear that I needed trek focused training. Amazingly, just as I came to this conclusion, I saw Summit Strength on a Facebook tag, checked it out and joined up!

The Training plans address issues that have been identified by Rowan in my 5-minute exercise video assessment, as well as working to improve my aerobic capacity. The progression of strength exercises and aerobic workouts are subtle yet very effective.

The online program is easy to follow and the exercise demonstration clips are a huge help. Information and tips provided by Rowan are very relevant for my trekking ambitions and he always responds quickly to any queries. "After having participated in the 5 days Hiker's Knee Challenge and seen results already, it was a no brainer to engage in the Hiker’s Knee 12-Week Prevention Program. I have been suffering from knee pain for some 18 months now and joined the program to reduce the pain. The strength exercises, combined with the life hacks shared in the emails, however, caused the pain to almost disappear. Winter is the worst time for my knee, and even though we have been through an entire winter month already my knee is behaving nicely even in the cold/wet weather.

I loved how personalised the entire program was and how knowledgeable Rowan is! We agreed on an initial plan and after a couple of weeks, I asked to increase my load, which was promptly responded. Also, Rowan is creative enough to adapt the workouts to whatever tools customer has at home and to adjust the exercises to accommodate any special needs. The strength workouts, the recovery sessions, and the cardio exercises were perfectly aligned to my needs as a hiker.

I joined the program during the lockdown. Keeping active and being accountable for my progress in our regular catchups was crucial to keep me active (both as physically active and not bored at home) and with great mental health. Every time I felt I would fall apart, Rowan had a little trick to keep me up, such as suggesting “emergency/stress exercises” and giving ideas to complete the workouts, such as stacking it as a habit with something else I would do daily. Shortly after the COVID-19 restrictions were lifted in NSW, I started walking down Sydney’s coast, all the way from Barrenjoey Lighthouse to La Perouse. I have been walking solid 15-20 km per hiking day, which I hadn’t been able at all after my injury 18 months ago. The Hiker’s Knee Prevention Program was a life changer to me and got me back in full strength to the outdoor activity I love the most.

Would I work with Summit Strength again or recommend the Hiker's Knee Program to others? Absolutely yes and yes! After graduating from the 12 weeks program, I immediately joined the Online Summit Program. Because I'm training from home, Rowan had me do a recorded physical assessment before we started so he had an idea what I was capable of. Rowan has been fantastic and has built a personal training plan that is simple but very focused. My experience was smooth and slow.  At my age and with my breast cancer history, I enjoyed exercising at a meaningful pace to give attention to the area I was working on.  

My joints are always in pain from cancer treatment and getting a good workout in, without the pounding or running that I use to do when I was younger, allows me to get a workout that leaves me feeling energetic and strong.  I was also worried about my calves getting bigger with all the reps I was performing in the calve raises, but I was pleasantly surprised to see the muscle definition in my calves after including those exercises in my routine.  My ankles feel stronger too.

I had come into this program with plantar pain from a previous exercise program.  Never had it before and really didn't know how to deal with it. 

I am also very new to this world of hiking, I've done one overnight with my sister. This nearly killed me, through the very challenging Kalamunda hills, the northern section of the track.  I basically knew nothing about hiking, gear, strength.  Nothing!!

My general experience was "outstanding".  The detail, the explanations, the way the program was delivered, both through trainerize and the small chunks of program, so you could manage each section.

I’d had some prior experience with personal trainers and online race prep plans, but Rowan’s approach is much more holistic and intuitive. It was a bit scary when I came to Rowan for help. I’ve never wanted to do be able to perform a sport or recreational activity as much as I do hike, and my feet have significant issues. Rowan's program was tailored specifically to my goal, my needs and my current level of fitness/ability.

Rowan adopted an approach that encapsulated a variety of training - not just trail running - and included substantial essential strength and recovery elements. He was quick to adapt to the program to my individual circumstances, e.g. using all equipment at home (as opposed to a gym, as I don't have a membership). Prior to commencing with Summit Strength I really believed my bushwalking days were behind me. Following a walk, I would find myself in severe pain for the following 7 - 10 days.  In a very sensible practical way, Rowan started my training program at a level I could manage with no difficulty. My program was very achievable.

Rowan was always available and very helpful. Within a very short period of time, perhaps a month I had noticeable results, my hip and leg pain had markedly reduced.

"I hired Summit Strength to generally feel less pain when hiking with weight and feel confident to do more multi-day hikes.  I was given hiking specific workouts to progress through that were suited to my home gym set-up and then to my gym (when I joined one halfway through the program). ​"At age 57 I decided to finally tackle a dream I’d had for over 40 years: to thru-hike the Ozark Highlands trail.  I was woefully out of shape and, as Principal in a coaching/training business and Partner in a law firm, had no time to go to the gym.  By the grace of God, I happened on a podcast that featured Rowan - this crazy Aussie who provided online training to people preparing for big adventures – and I figured I had nothing to lose.  One conversation, a few short evaluation videos, and a website link later, and I was on my way. 

Over the next 4 months or so, Rowan transformed me from a very soft, cloistered, executive into a backpacker capable of tackling the mountains I’d only dreamed of hiking.  He provided me with workouts that I could do in my office, in innumerable hotel gyms and rooms, and on the stairs and sidewalks in the neighborhood surrounding my office. 

Though “only” 165 miles, the OHT requires 25,000+ total feet of elevation gain & loss over that distance.  Catastrophic equipment failure and poor calendar management (I didn’t give myself enough time before I had to return to work) meant I had to cut the trip short.  But throughout the 85+ miles I walked, I can honestly say I never experienced a sore muscle or any form of injury.  Think about that!  A guy my age doing a solo walk through rugged country without any physical challenges whatsoever!  I give all the credit to my friend Rowan without whom I could never have succeeded. 

Outdoor adventure does not require the same type of physical fitness that your average trainer can provide.  If you want to give yourself the best chance to succeed, engage with Rowan.  He knows what he’s doing and he’s an awesome guy! "

"I am quite fit and exercise regularly but I wanted specific focus toward building strength and endurance in my legs in order to protect myself (particularly knees) after scrambles and on downhills. I also had never done any specific training for hiking / scrambling - I just went out and did the activity.

Rowan developed a specific program for me that dialed in certain facets that I had not pursued for scrambling. These include strengthening core, glutes, and the entire leg with focus on taking time during the lowering phase to simulate the repeated downhill portions of scrambles. In addition, he helped me build up my lactate tolerance and built strength while hiking using weighted hill repeats, as examples. So, very specific exercises that translate to hiking / scrambling.
 
Rowan offers tailored advice and is very responsive. Over several weeks I saw noticeable improvements in every exercise. For example, as someone with a history of knee injuries, I have always backed away from single leg squats and pistol squats. In 30+ years of lots of types of training, I can’t recall I ever did a pistol squat. Well, now I have - many times - and it was developed gradually over a series of weeks and I can tell that I am considerably stronger.
 
I would absolutely work with them again. I need to take some time off from the program now due to other commitments. But I recommend Rowan wholeheartedly."

I first started working with Summit Strength to prepare for an end to end hike on the Bibbulmun Track. Specifically, I wanted help with nutrition and mental health strategies.

We started with an initial call to identify where Rowan could help me. Once agreed, he set up a hike fit program for me in the gym and with my pack outdoors. I also had access to all his education information, videos and could ask any questions at any time.

Via the client group I was kept motivated, accountable and again could ask so many questions. There was access to live video chats as a group. I also took advantage of access to a nutritionist in the group chat and one-on-one. I met an amazing group of people online. All in all a wonderful experience.

I had a few hiccups in the last few weeks of training. Rowan was able to support the process, helped with relaxation techniques and some things I could do at home eg hot pack, massage. Felt supported!

Yes I would definitely recommend Summit Strength. The level of information given on all aspects of hiking, the constant practical reinforcement of skills and mental health all delivered in such a way that is empowering. At the end of the day, it is you on the hike and you need to be the one with the arsenal of skills to meet the challenges of thru hiking and thrive.

My goal was to train (get in shape) to hike Mt Whitney. I hired Summit Strength to train and educate me about hiking which I learned a massive amount, such as: it isn’t just get out and walk; you need to strengthen your knees, quads, glutes and ankles to bear the load of days of hiking; there are reasons and ways of training for aerobic endurance; crucial foot care; importance of trekking poles; altitude (elevation); nutrition; mindset.  Sure, you can throw an ill-fitted pack on and hike without poles but I’ll be passing you by and enjoying myself because I was physically and mentally prepared and my body isn’t so severely taxed.

My specific challenge was potential knee pain which they addressed by various strength exercises to target the muscles surrounding the knee and building the quads and glutes to aid the knee.

They also were aware of my current strength ability by me performing  exercise assessments so they could tailor specific exercises for me and were aware that I was older and didn’t write a typical gym plan which is usually geared for someone younger and that would have been too hard on my body initially.

Summit Strength has an incredibly well thought out individually-tailored plan encompassing exercises of strength, aerobic and hiking in a fantastic App that has video demonstrations of your particular exercises along with written instructions and tells you exactly how many sets, reps, amount of time.  It’s perfect because it’s all right there in one place showing you exactly what you need to do each day. The great thing is your plan changes every few weeks to keep preparing your body.

The other incredible aspect of Summit Strength is the plethora of education, information and virtual coaching calls. Besides receiving weekly lessons and strategies you are enrolled in a private Summit Strength Facebook group which has its own wealth of training information, in addition to the support of a group of like-minded people who are planning various hiking trips.

I am so thrilled that I can squat to the ground as I certainly couldn’t before. I don’t have the stiffness in my body like before, especially getting out of bed in the morning. I walk taller. A side note, I did not concentrate on losing weight. My focus was strength and aerobic fitness. I’m so elated I did this program!

My experience with Summit Strength has far exceeded any expectations I had. My previous training experience was through a big chain gym where they use standard plans for everyone - the one size fits all. I was actually properly assessed, given a plan that worked for my particular hike, and was encouraged to communicate any time something wasn’t working or didn’t feel right. 

The availability and support Rowan has shown is exceptional. Doing a plan online or virtual seems daunting but I can truly say it never felt that way. I knew I could ask questions any time or have my program tweaked.

I would definitely work with and recommend Summit Strength again - in a heartbeat!! Having someone knowledgeable who is also able to translate that into a program along with education and compassion and availability is extremely rare.

I had this loose plan about a solo backpacking trip and a summit of Mount Whitney with 2 women friends from work, who were 20yrs younger than me. I tried to organize a training schedule for myself, and quickly became overwhelmed - and to be honest- kind of panicked.

I contacted Rowan, and joined the Summit Strength team. Over the months that followed, I became someone I thought at my age was “gone for good and never coming back”. It took about four weeks to see any gains. When I did, it was hopeful.
