I have an embarrassing admission to make to you all... when I am out hiking, I get huffed and puffed on hills.
I know, what a terrible thing to admit. But it is the truth.
Now, this isn't always the case. But right now it is something which I am struggling with. And it definitely is impacting my enjoyment on the trail.
Let me tell you a story:
As hikers, we are well aware that uphill hiking can be tough. Burning legs, red faces and heaving lungs, it can be a genuine challenge on many adventures. And if you throw a heavy pack in the mix, it can turn into a real ordeal.
When it comes to training for uphill, a hiker needs to be smart. While getting your legs strong is always going to be good, there are a few specific exercises which will help you more in this situation. This article will share with you three of the best strength exercises a hiker can do, to turn their uphill hiking into a walk in the park.
In this episode, I discuss how a mountaineer can get fit and strong for the mountains when they don't have any elevation to train on.
As hikers, we all know downhill hiking can be tough. There is nothing quite like it to turn the legs into jelly, the toes into bruised messes and the knees into a genuine worry!
And when it comes to training for descents, a hiker needs to be smart. This article will share with you the two best exercises a hiker can do, to help their downhill hiking feel more comfortable.
In this episode, I discuss a few unusual ways of progressing your stair or hill intervals (which don't involve adding extra weight, spending more time or finding a new place to train).
In this episode I discuss Altitude Masks (also known as Elevation Masks) and whether they are an effective training tool for hikers, trekkers or mountaineers heading off on a high altitude adventure.
"How do I prepare for a big elevation hike if I don't have any mountains to train on?"
This is one of the most common questions I get asked.
And I can completely understand how concerning this situation is! Because preparing for a significant adventure in itself can be intimidating enough...
But when you are seeing pictures of these massive mountains you are planning to climb, but where you live is about as flat as a pancake, it can be seriously stressful!
This mini-course was created to help inform and educate hikers and mountaineers who are using (or might still be considering) simulated altitude training.
In this episode, I explore a simple strategy on how someone can teach themselves to walk up a hill slowly (as opposed to just rushing to the top!)
In this episode, I discuss my simple (and proven!) formula on how to prepare your body for an elevation gain hike, if you live at sea level.
