Training For Mountaineering: Getting Strong Without Putting On Muscle

In this video lecture, I explain precisely how a mountaineer can develop their strength without running the risk of putting on extra weight (which they have to carry up the mountain).
 “I am weight training with light weight and more reps as I don't need to be dragging excess muscle mass up the mountain.”
This a statement which I see all the time from mountaineers. And it really boils my blood. Because there is SO much wrong with this, but so many mountaineers take it as gospel.

There are three big issues with following this thought process:
  1. You will be significantly compromising your performance on the mountain
  2. You will be wasting a tremendous amount of time in the gym
  3. You will be missing out on all the fantastic benefits that genuine strength training can give mountaineers.

Simply put, it is entirely possible for a mountaineer to get incredibly strong, without putting on any extra muscle.

And this video will tell you exactly how to do that.

  • Why only performing doing low load, high rep strength work is a mistake (and the exact benefits you will be missing out on with this approach)
  • Why not all strength development comes from muscle growth (and several phenomenons which absolutely proves this is the case)
