The Principles Of Endurance Training For Mountaineers

In this video lecture, I explore six underlying principles of training that all mountaineers need to consider in regards to their endurance training and fitness.

There are certain things a mountaineer needs to include in their training, to ensure long term success in their training.

It doesn't matter what workouts, what training plans or what gadgets you are applying in your training if you don't follow these principles you are shooting yourself in the foot.

But if you DO follow the following principles, consistently, you will be setting yourself up for long term success, by ensuring you are constantly improving your performance while at the same time minimising your risk of injury and burnout.

Now there are many different approaches to this and many different definitions, but this video explores the principles which I have learnt in my education and how I apply it into the world of mountaineering.
 
You will learn:
 
  • The six core principles a mountaineer needs to follow for long term success in their endurance training
  • The number one concept you need to follow to ensure continual improvement
  • Why common sense isn't common
  • Why a mountaineer needs to keep the end goal in mind with their training (and several mistakes I see mountaineers continually make with this)
  • Individualisation: you are an individual, and your training plan needs to reflect this
  • Why consistency trumps everything (plus a few everyday 'speed bumps' mountaineers will experience which will get in the way of this)
  • The importance of working on structural tolerance (and why you need to respect the foundation building phases of your training and fitness)
  • Why mountaineers cannot train with the simplicity of a marathon runner or cyclist (and two areas you need to incorporate into your endurance training)
