How Andrea Overcame Knee Pain While Hiking And Hiked her Longest Day Ever!

Hear how Andrea defeated knee pain while hiking, conquered the Great Ocean Walk and became the fittest, strongest and most resilient hiker she was ever been.

Preventing Knee Pain While Hiking

If you struggle with knee pain while hiking, simply doing more hiking isn't likely to fix it.

More than likely, you need some type of specific, targeted training to help your body overcome this issue. 

This doesn't mean you have to give up hiking... but it does mean you have to be smarter with your training than the average hiker.

A classic example of this is one of my online clients, Andrea.

Eleven weeks ago, she came to me wanting help with her training.

She loved her hiking. But she had ongoing knee pain which troubled her on adventures.  And she wanted to improve her fitness for the trail so that she could feel more comfortable on tougher hikes.

 So she signed up for the 12-Week Hikers Knee Prevention Program. And away we went.

 In this initial online assessment, we identified two significant areas which needed work:

  1. Single leg strength (in the quadriceps and glutes)
  2. Hip mobility

Knowing that both of these directly cause knee pain while hiking. we knew exactly what we needed to target in her training. And away we went!

To kick things off, we started with a weekly routine which included:

  • 2 x home strength workouts
  • 1 x hill interval workout
  • 1 x casual bike ride
  • 1x hike 
  • 1x recovery/mobility workout

As we moved forward, we progressed each of these workouts, incorporated some pool and stair sessions, and made sure she was regularly getting a new challenge to keep the body moving forward.

Over the first month, Andrea noticed some considerable differences to her hiking fitness. Her legs were feeling stronger. She wasn't huffing and puffing quite as much. She was flying up hills. And she was feeling great!

But she hadn't noticed any difference to her knee pain. But she trusted the process, stuck with it.

And guess what happened? Just last weekend, she tackled the Great Ocean Walk, did the longest hiking day of her life and got through it all almost completely pain-free!

How good is that!

Andrea is the classic example of how applying some smart training into your week, can make some phenomenal differences to your time on the trail.
