I Used To Think My Body Was Broken

Do you want to know a secret?

For YEARS I thought my body was broken. That there was something wrong with it. And that I was just not cut out to be anymore more than a 'mediocre' exerciser.

Let me tell you why:

Growing up and through my teenage years, I used to LOVE sports. I was big into soccer for many many years. I was a die-hard bodyboarder (even if I wasn't very good at it). And had aspirations to become a world class sprinter.

So I definitely wasn't a stranger to exercise and training.

But there was one thing which used to plague me.

Injury.

Lower back pain. Shin splints. Hamstring strains. Rolled ankles. Plantar fasciitis. I had my fair share of injuries over those years.

As I got a bit older, gave up most of these regular sports, and began to train more to simply look and feel good, injuries still plagued me.

I remember I never liked training with any of my friends. Because I knew if I didn't train in MY particular way, if I went at someone elses pace, did exercises I wasn't comfortable with or tried to be competitive, I would ALWAYS pull up with some type of ache, pain or injury.

And I thought something was wrong with me.

Because I would see people all around me, jumping into Crossfit Sessions, loving this HIIT training, doing marathon gym sessions, going out for long runs every day, and I thought to myself "why can't I do that?"

What is wrong with me?

So I stuck to training by myself. I worked at my own pace. Did my own thing. And slowly but surely, saw the results I wanted.

But it was always in the back of my head, why did my body suck so much?

Why couldn't I do the things that everyone else around me were doing with no difficulty?

What was going on?

But over the years, as I really got into my coaching career and started working with more clients 1:1, I came to a realisation:

I was NOT the only person in this situation.

There were so many people with the same story.

Who just couldn't survive quick, hard and random training.

Who needed a different type of training, than what seemed the 'in thing' in the gym.

Who needed a slower, smarter and more structured approach.

And who needed training tailored around their individual needs and preferences, rather than a 'one size fits all' approach.

That realisation was a turning point for me in my career.

These days, I don't have that voice in the back of my head. I am perfectly happy to train at my own pace. If I am with friends, I have no problem sticking within my own limits.

And in my coaching, I make it a point of mine NEVER to put someone in a training situation that they are not suited for. That doesn't mean we never work at higher intensity, or do more difficult workouts. But I make sure every exercise, every recommendation and every prescription is tailored to the individual. Because there is no 'one sized fits all' approach to training and fitness. We are all unique. And we deserve training which reflects that.

So if you have ever found yourself in this situation, where the training you have done in the past has not worked for you, and you want an approach that will keep you safe, while still maximising your results for the trail, then please know, I am here to help.
