How Jeremy Trained For Hiking At Home

This is Jeremy. Learn how he trained for hiking and got fit to feel confident tackling some more 'hardcore' hikes, all from the comfort of his own home!

Training For Hiking At Home

"I smashed a 30km hike on easy mode from previously struggling to do 8-10km, with about two months training."
These kind words came from online client Jeremy, and I want to say, I was pretty chuffed!

Now Jeremy reached out to me a little while ago, wanting help upping his hiking kilometres, as he was an amateur nature photographer who wanted to do some more 'hardcore' hikes (while lugging all of his camera gear).

But the catch was, he didn't have time to get out and go hiking and walking constantly.

So he wanted some convenient workouts to do in his home gym, which could get him fit, strong and injury-proof for the trail...

But wouldn't come with a ridiculous time commitment which would take over his life.

So that is what we did!

After our initial video assessment, we started his programming with:

  • 2x 40 minute home strength and stability sessions
  • 1x 40-minute cross trainer session

After a month or so, we added in an extra 40-minute muscular endurance session (i.e. strength training but with lots of reps)

That was it!

Simple. Time-efficient. And effective.

Now you might be thinking to yourself right now, "but where is the hiking?"

And it is true, Jeremy got out and hiked when he could.

But as this was not possible to be a weekly or even bi-weekly occurrence, that was not part of his 'official' program - and he just hit the trail when he got the chance.

So moral of the story today?

If you can't get out on the trail consistent, and want to get fit for hiking at home, it is very possible!

You just need smart programming. You need exercises that work around your needs and preferences. And a flexible approach.

And you will be surprised at what you can accomplish!

Because I'm training from home, Rowan had me do a recorded physical assessment before we started so he had an idea what I was capable of. Rowan has been fantastic and has built a personal training plan that is simple but very focused. He's always available to answer questions or provide alternatives to suit what equipment I have available to me. He's also been able to adjust my training plan to fit into my schedule by shortening my work outs so I can keep on top of my training even when I get busy. Shortly after starting with Rowan I was able to hike EASY 10km+ days on the trail every day for 3 days. Previously this would have been extremely difficult, but I was super comfortable and had plenty in the tank to do more (I could have doubled those days!)

I would highly recommend Rowan to any hiker or outdoor enthusiast who wants to get a bit more out of their adventures, or if you've got a more serious expedition planned and want to feel confident in your strength and ability so you can enjoy the experience."
