This mini-course was created to help inform and educate hikers and mountaineers who are using (or might still be considering) simulated altitude training.
Understanding Altitude Training

When it comes to altitude training for hikers and mountaineers, there is a huge amount of confusion, misinformation and misinterpretation. This video will explore the root cause of these issues, and help you understand the different types of altitude training available and how they work.

You will learn:

  • The three different types of altitude training available (and how they work)
  • The type of simulated altitude you will experience when using a commercially available altitude tent, chamber or mask
  • Can altitude training help prevent altitude sickness?
  • Where a huge amount of the confusion comes from when it comes to interpreting the science of altitude training

Training in an altitude chamber, or with an altitude mask, is becoming more and more popular in the hiking and mountaineering world. This video explores this type of altitude training if it is beneficial for hikers and mountaineers and how to utilise it in your preparations best.

  • How training in an altitude chamber can help endurance performance

Sleeping in an altitude tent is often recommended to help 'pre-acclimatise' a hiker or mountaineer before a high altitude adventure. This video explores the key details you need to follow, to get the best out of this approach.

  • Why the 'live low, sleep high' training model is a solid approach for hikers and mountaineers
  • The #1 most important factor when it comes to any type of altitude training
  • The minimum effective dose needed when sleeping in an altitude tent
  • Some simple guidelines to get the most out of this approach
  • Some practical considerations you need to weigh up when considering using an altitude tent

If you do choose to utilise altitude training in your mountain preparation, there are several practical considerations you need to be aware of.

Altitude training is a popular method of training for for high altitude hiking and mountaineering. While it can never compare to natural acclimatisation and time on the mountain, if used right, it can be a useful aid to a high altitude hiker or mountaineer's preparations. If used wrong, however, it can be a waste of time, a waste of money and even a detriment to your overall success. So be smart!
