The Abdominal Brace

Every heard someone say “engage your core” or “squeeze your abs”? Not 100% sure what that actually means?

This video gives you a rundown on exactly what this is, why core stability is so important and how to best practice this.

Key Notes:

  • The abdominal brace is essential for:
    • Allowing efficient power transfer through the body
    • Protecting the back
    • Aiding stability (particularly during a slip, stumble or fall)

  • Different intensities of the brace and appropriate for different situations:
    • 100% intensity = heavy strength training
    • 80% intensity = general strength training, picking up your pack or climbing a high step with a heavy pack
    • 60% intensity = when hiking over unstable surfaces or for very low load strength exercises
    • 30-40% intensity = when hiking

  • Practice this as much as you can! Do this before every single repetition during your strength training, when you are walking around, when you are standing on the bus etc.
