​My name is Rowan Smith, and I specialise in helping hikers get fit, strong and resilient so they can conquer every adventure. 

I KNOW that following a structured training program can dramatically improve a hiker's comfort, enjoyment, and performance on the trail.

Over the years at Summit Strength, we have helped hundreds of hikers discover the incredible benefits of this type of specialised training through our online coaching programs. 

However, we are well aware that many hikers out there may not quite need the level of support our coaching programs offer or may not want to financially invest in our full packages (which is fair enough!). 

And that is why we have created this course;

​This course is designed to teach a hiker how to create their own strength and conditioning program to support their hiking.

So you can access all the fantastic benefits that effective training can bring in a self-paced and cost-effective way.

  • Clear instructions on how to plan your training hikes (and ensure a successful build around whatever schedule you may have)

  • A 'recipe list' of great cardio workouts for hikers (which include outdoor, home and gym workouts to choose from) 

  • A 'plug and play' system to create effective strength training workouts (so you can build your strength and endurance for the trail in a way that suits your preferences)

  • Simple directions on how to adjust your training if you are preparing for a big trip OR if you just want to build your fitness for regular hiking 

  • Time-efficient strategies on how to aid your body's recovery and relaxation in between sessions (helping you stay fresh and ready!)

  • Some valuable insights to help you stay consistent with your training over the long term (because consistency is the 'magic ingredient' when it comes to any training journey!)

The DIY course curriculum will cover:

  • Putting Together Your Training Plan 

This course will teach you strategies, methods, and ideas that we have tested and honed with hundreds and hundreds of hikers over the years.

So, ultimately, you will have clear direction on planning and applying your training to become the most fit, strong and capable hiker you can be! ​

1. Step One: 
​Watch The Lessons 

When you sign up, you will gain access to our education platform, where you can access the video lessons.

You will need to work through these lessons and take in the information, ideas and strategies.

2. Step Two:
Create Your Program

Once you have completed the lessons, you will then need to sit down and create your own workouts and training plan. 

To make this as easy as possible, you will be provided with a simple spreadsheet where you can 'copy and paste' the workouts and exercises you want into our templates. 

3. Step Three:
​Put It Into Action!

Once you have your plan, you will need to put the training into action!

Do the workouts, follow the longer-term plan and reap the rewards on the trail!

However, to be clear, you will have to put some time and effort into this. To get the results that I know are possible, you will have to go through the lessons, put together your plan and take action on applying the workouts.

Who Is This Course For?
This course is for any hiker interested in learning how to put together a well-rounded training program to help your time on the trail.

​Whether you are a first-time hiker or an experienced thru-hiker, this information will be valuable.​

However, this is NOT for someone who is looking to learn about advanced, or complicated training principles. We keep our training strategies as simple as possible, so anyone can benefit from them (regardless of experience or prior knowledge). 
What If I Have an Injury?
If you have an injury or pain and are unsure how to manage it, please see a physiotherapist or a physical therapist.

If you are confident in managing your issue, the information in the course will be relevant for your general training for hiking - and you will have to use your discretion on exercise and workout choices. ​
Will I Get a Training pl​an?
You will not be provided with any pre-made training programs. 

You will be provided with the information and ideas needed to put together your own program - but you will have to work through the lessons and put the program together by yourself. 
How are The Lessons Delivered?
The lessons are delivered via pre-recorded video lessons, where each topic is explained. 

These videos are hosted and accessed through out education platform (if you sign up, you will be sent the link to access this platform and find the course). 

These are NOT live videos (as this is a self-paced course). 
How Long Does The Course Go For? ANd How Long Will I Have access To The Course? 
The course content will take about 3-5 hours to work through. However, this course is entirely self-paced, so you can work through things as quickly or slowly as you like. 

You will have access to this course for as long as Summit Strength is still operating (which we plan to be doing for many years ahead!). 
What If I Have Any Questions Through The Process?
As part of the course, you will also get access to our 'Training For Hiking Community' where you can ask questions, and get some direction on the content. 

This is not 1:1 coaching, or personal training, but it is an online group forum.
